The Adapta Sert
ão project

Climate change is a major challenge that all countries of the world have to face in the years to come. The poorest areas will suffer the most because they do not have adequate infrastructures and human and technical capabilities to cope with the events that may occur at a local and regional level. Semi-arid environments are particularly vulnerable to climate change impacts. Their economies are often based on pasture and subsistence agriculture but they lack of one of the most essential resources: water. Current scenarios predict that climate variability is already occurring in semi-arid areas and will increase in the next years.

Adapta Sertão starts in 2006 as the Pintadas Solar pilot project in Pintadas,  a municipality of 11.000 inhabitants located in the interior of the state of Bahia, Northeast Brazil. The region is characterized by a semi-arid climate with very little precipitation and  hot temperatures  sandy soils and pro-longed periods of droughts, which are increasing due to climate change. The project has fostered an integrated development approach to community adaptation and mitigation to climate change by articulating the use of appropriated water efficient and clean energy technologies to improve agricultural practices, enhance food security and generate income. Links with the growing biofuel industry are also being made.

Adapta Sertão is the result of a vibrant

collaborative partnership that gathered multilevel and multi-sectorial  partners that committed during the last  two years (2006-2008)  to work  together in order to   establish  the seeds for a model that can be replicated not only in Brazil but around the world. The project is also based on the integration of four strategic aspects: climate change, technology, process and partenrship (learn more about them).

The long-term objectives of the project are:

1. Promoting food security. The project aims to secure food to several families by disseminating small scale irrigation systems through micro-finance; and

2. Income generation. The project aims also to increase the income of small farmers in the region by linking them to local and regional markets.
